Bruins sign Kessel and Other Recent News

Here are some recent signing of various players by the Boston Bruins:

Restricted C/W Brad Boyes (2 years, $3 million)
Restricted D Milan Jurcina (1 year, $500,000)
Unrestricted RW Shean Donovan (2 years, $1.85 million)
Unrestricted D Nathan Dempsey (1 year, $450,000)
Unrestricted RW Mark Mowers (1 year, $462,500)
Unrestricted RW Jeff Hoggan (1 year $450,000)
Unrestricted D Wade Brookbank (1 year, $450,000)
Unrestricted LW Chris Collins (2 years, $900,000???)
Unrestricted C/LW Pascal Pelletier (Unknown)
Unrestricted D Jason York (Unknown)

The team also went to arbitration with David Tanabe and settled with a $1.275 million contract but exercised an option to walk-away from the contract a day later. I can only assume that the team did this in hopes of using Tanabe as trade bait and never considered keeping him.

News today says that the 5th overall pick Phil Kessel has opted to leave college and sign with the Bruins. This is still rumor until there is an official team announcement by GM Peter Chiarelli. If he does sign the centre will most likely play left wing on the second line with Marc Savard and Glen Murray. The deal is said to be for 3 years with a maximum of $850,000 per year plus bonuses.

This means the only hurdle is the re-signing of restricted free agent Patrice Bergeron, and that should be accomplished before training camp begins.

*NOTE - It is now official, Phill Kessel has signed a multi-year deal. No terms of the contract were announced.

We will be better than last year but still have a long way to go to contend. Chara is good but not as good as the money spent on him. He looked great in Ottawa because the Sens. were never in their own end - they always had the puck - The Bruins will not have this luxury.

We are a billion times better than last year! Not that, that is tough to accomplish.

Nice of you to finally comment :) I see you coming on every once and a while.

So I take it you are not a Chara fan. I know they spent a lot of money on him, but I think it was well spent. I get to see him a lot when I go to see the Bruins play, and he is excellent.

We will soon see though eh? If I know our team they will give him plenty of opportunities to be a defencman. ;)

I think we will contend for sure and will definetly make the playoffs, as long as we don't run into any major injury problems. Contending for the cup now that is a little different. I can dream, but not this year.

It's not that I am not a Chara fan - I do think he is good but probably 2.5 or 3 million good. He is not the best D-man in the league like some say. I'm not sure he is top 5. However, he will make us better and yes we will make the playoffs 6th or 7th place but I still think we are 2-3 years away from a deep run.

Oh Yeah - I was more excited about Marc Savard and Paul Mara signing than I was Chara. But our biggest improvement came when we got rid of Nick Boynton and Hal Gill (got to feel bad for Rayzor getting away to a new team only to be followed by Gill - probably the biggest reason he lost his confidence in the 1st place).
